Top Things to See and Do in Bracklesham Bay
Perhaps once a less popular choice for holidaymakers – compared to its neighbouring villages of East and West Wittering – recent developments and investment have put Bracklesham Bay firmly on the map. With numerous beachfront holiday lets and various local amenities, Bracklesham offers much more than just a pebbly beach.
Fossil hunting on the beach
According to many well-respected sources, Bracklesham Bay is one of the best places for fossil hunting in the UK, especially during springtime during scouring tides. A popular location for ray and shark’ teeth, bivalves, and gastropods, the flat expanse of beach (at low tide) is ideal for children to scan the sands for the remains of prehistoric creatures. Occasionally, you can find corals – also look out for the often-overlooked, large, single-celled foraminifera. For best results, visit an hour before low tide.
Watch the Sunset
Bracklesham Bay is known for year-round spectacular sunsets, jutted slightly on the Manhood Peninsula. Watch the yellow, orange, and red hues as the sun sets to the west, with Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight in the distance. Combine it with dinner or a sundowner at Billy’s on the Beach.
Learn to Kitesurf
Hailed as one of the best spots in the UK for kite surfing due to its shallow waters and flat sands, try kite surfing during your stay in Bracklesham Bay. South Coast Kitesurf School offers professional tuition from qualified, passionate instructors seven days a week, catering to all ages and abilities.
If you fancy something more relaxing, opt for paddle boarding tuition or hire on a less windy day.
Walk to East or West Wittering
At low tide, you can walk along the beach from Bracklesham Bay to East Head in West Wittering. The flat, wet sand makes for easy walking and is ideal for pushchairs. Depending on your walking speed, this will take around 1.5 hours, and there are some lovely spots to stop and rest.
If you fancy a shorter walk, turn off the beach into East Wittering Village for a well-earned refreshment at one of its numerous cafes. Beware of the incoming tide on your return walk, but be safe, knowing there are many exit points into the villages if need be.
Fresh air suggests…
Billy’s on the Beach is a popular licensed restaurant with stunning beach views. It serves delicious food all day but book a table ahead during the high season.
Dom’s Italian-inspired family restaurant offers a warm welcome, a blazing pizza oven, and extensive pasta dishes. Great value for money and child-friendly, Dom’s is the perfect place to feed the whole family.
