Chichester Harbour Walks

Many people choose to holiday close to Chichester and the South Downs for the scenic and varied walks the area has to offer. With rolling hills to the north and the coast to the south, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to walking trails. Among the best options for outdoor enthusiasts are Chichester harbour walks, offering serene coastal views and the chance to enjoy the natural beauty of this stunning region.

Chichester Marina to Dell Quay – 7.5km

Just a stone’s throw away from the Fresh Air offices, Chichester Marina acts as the perfect base for many Chichester harbour walks and country trails.

Directions

Park for free and grab a coffee or croissant from The Boat House Cafe before you start your walk. Head across the lock, with the shore on your left, and you’ll see a path called Salterns Copse. Take the left where the path forks. Hug the shoreline and enjoy the peaceful beauty of the harbour wildlife and gentle lapping waters. As you continue, you’ll experience the serene atmosphere that defines Chichester harbour walks, with views of the shimmering waters and wide open spaces.

Follow the path, which continues along a field boundary. Take in views of Chichester’s magnificent cathedral spire in the distance. As you turn inland, you’ll eventually reach a country road. Turn left to walk down into the quaint village of Dell Quay. Enjoy a drink or lunch at The Crown and Anchor pub, which boasts fantastic harbour views and serves delicious food.

Just beyond the pub, you can walk onto the historic quay, often bustling with sailing activity at high tide. Head back to Chichester Marina along the same path – or for a change of scenery, head up the road out of Dell Quay, past the entrance of the path you previously took, and turn right onto a track signposted Apuldram Manor Farm. This will take you back to Chichester Marina. Note, this is a section of the Salterns Way cycle route, so beware of approaching cyclists!

Extend your walk

If you want to extend your walk, bear right just before the quay and walk along the path to the small village of Fishbourne. From there, you can either carry on to Chichester or stay and have a bite to eat at the fabulous Bulls Head.
